The Supreme Court of Texas issued a ruling Tuesday that prohibits Harris County from launching a guaranteed income program which is currently being disputed by Attorney General Ken Paxton. The decision comes just days after Houston County Judge Ursula Hall struck down Paxton’s arguments that the Uplift Harris program, which distributes monthly stipends to over 1,900 low-income residents, is unconstitutional. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is challenging the program, saying it violates the Texas Constitution.
Last week a judge denied Paxton's claim that Uplift Harris violated the Texas Constitution. He appealed that decision and it was denied on Monday.
The Texas Supreme Court blocked Harris County's guaranteed income program on Tuesday, as the first round of checks were being sent out to low-income families. Judge Lina Hidalgo said the state has known about the program for over a year.
Paxton sued Harris County for implementing a guaranteed income program, called Uplift Harris, which would give $500 a month to nearly 2,000 low income households over an 18-month period.
