Mapping the Milky Way's magnetic field in 3D

by Phys.org

Phys.org— We are all very familiar with the concept of the Earth's magnetic field. It turns out that most objects in space have magnetic fields but it's quite tricky to measure them. Astronomers have developed an ingenious way to measure the magnetic field of the Milky Way using polarized light from interstellar dust grains that align themselves to the magnetic field lines. A new survey has begun this mapping process and has mapped an area that covers the equivalent of 15 times the full moon.

Big Think—New map reveals the Milky Way’s magnetic heart. Look toward Sagittarius. Beyond lies the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ): the cold, dusty heart of our Milky Way. The CMZ contains 60 million solar masses’ worth of particles at -432 degrees Fahrenheit (-258°C). This dust is the stuff from which planets and stars are built — a process that depends on the interaction between the dust and the CMZ’s magnetic fields. The image below is a major step toward better understanding that process. For the first time, it maps the CMZ’s various magnetic fields...

Phys.org—Stable magnetic bundles achieved at room temperature and zero magnetic field. Recently, the research team led by Prof. Du Haifeng from the High Magnetic Field laboratory at Hefei Institutes of Physical Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences achieved stable magnetic bundles at room temperature without the need for any external magnetic field.

The Guardian—There’s one thing standing in the way of a ceasefire: Netanyahu’s refusal to compromise. The Israeli PM has rejected the latest deal. Both he and Hamas’s leadership must stop playing politics with people’s livesThe latest twists and turns in negotiations to end the war in Gaza appear labyrinthine and confusing. But it’s really not that complicated. Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, must compromise on the outstanding details of the proposed ceasefire deal and Hamas’s weekend counter-offer – and immediately halt Israel’s criminal bombing of Gaza and reckless military...
