• New protein imaging method supports the design of innovative new cancer drugs

Scientists have successfully used a new imaging technique to determine the structure and interactions of a protein complex that plays a significant part in the initiation and progression of cancer. They showed that it was possible to use a high-resolution form of cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to gain a better insight into how the protein complex binds to inhibitor drug molecules.

Bird Flu Is Spreading in Alarming New Ways

Last Friday, a health alert from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention pinged its way across the inboxes of clinicians and state health departments all over the US. The message described how a dairy farm worker in Texas had contracted H5N1, the highly infectious strain of avian influenza, or bird flu, that’s currently circling worldwide. The dairy worker had caught the virus, apparently, from cattle. The CDC’s alert urged doctors to be vigilant and consider H5N1 a possibility in any...

  • Ram: A window to the divine, and a potent political lever in New India

Early this year, the consecration of the Ram Janmabhoomi temple in Ayodhya, which signifies the return of Ram Lalla to the city of his birth, was seen as the deliberate instrumentalisation of Ram’s legacy, with the BJP capitalising on the emotive appeal of Lord Ram across all strata of society ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. The Ram Mandir movement, of course, has been a rallying cry for the party, which has succeeded in positioning itself as champions of ‘the Hindu cause’ by...

  • New benzofuran synthesis method enables complex molecule creation

In the field of organic chemistry, scientists are always looking out for new types of reactions to unlock synthesis routes for challenging compounds. Most of the progress that we have witnessed in pharmaceutics and agrochemicals over the past few decades can be traced back to the discovery of novel practical reaction pathways. Such pathways often involve the selective replacement of a functional group with another, the formation of aromatic rings, or the strategic cleaving of parts of a...
