In January 1970, the final passenger trains pulled out of Sheffield's Victoria Station bringing to an end its almost 120-year service.

It is a ‘foodie hub’ a short stroll from Sheffield city centre, which in 2023 was named one of the UK’s coolest places to live. These nostalgic photos show how Broomhill has changed over the years, including some of the neighbourhood’s lost pubs and the shops, cafes and restaurants on Fulwood Road. How many of these locations do you recognise and do you remember the old businesses pictured?
This retro gallery of black and white photographs show just how much life has changed in the city over the last 60 years.
The end of 1975 brought devastation and destruction as a large part of Kirkgate Market was consumed by fire. Around four acres of the site was destroyed in a blaze which took 110 fireman two hours to control. Earlier in the year Leeds and its footballing family were ‘robbed’ of European Cup glory against Bayern Munich. Outrage and injustice remain the overriding emotions for a generation of Leeds United fans who were in Paris that night. The two news headlines form part of this gallery...
It’s one of Sheffield’s most bustling streets, stretching all the way from the top of Firth Park through Shiregreen to the junction with Ecclesfield Road. These nostalgic photos show how Bellhouse Road has changed over the last century, from the early 1900s to the present day. Lost shops, pubs and banks feature in this retro photo gallery which also chronicles changing modes of transport, right back to the days of the horse and cart.
These are the pubs where Sheffielders would slake their thirst and strike up a conversation during the 1960s. There was a lot more choice back then, with over 75,000 pubs across the UK in 1960 compared with fewer than 50,000 today. Some of the watering holes pictured in this retro photo gallery are still with us today but many have closed during the intervening years. The pubs pictured include the Old Blue Bell and the Traveller’s Rest in Sheffield city centre, the Earl Grey on Ecclesall Road...
Supermarket shopping has changed considerably over the years. These photos take you back to the 1980s and 1990s in Sheffield, long before a Lidl or Aldi was popping up on every street corner. They show some of the lost supermarket chains like Safeway, which was bought by Morrisons, and Netto, Fine Fare and Somerfield. Some of these stores have gone for good while others have been converted, like the large Waitrose at the bottom of Ecclesall Road, which used to be a Safeway store, and the old...
These photos take you back to the 1970s and nurseries, primary schools and middle schools in Sheffield at the time. Youngsters can be seen in the playground, at their desks and out and about in the community in these nostalgic images. One set of pupils are seen preparing for a visit by the Queen while another group are excited to welcome a Womble. This retro photo gallery also captures the school buildings in which thousands of children in the city spent their formative years.
Sheffield Wednesday’s battling 2-2 draw at home to high-flying Norwich City was a momentous occasion in the club’s proud history. It was the Owls’ 5,000th league match, with the vast majority of those games having been played at Hillsborough Stadium. It has been Sheffield Wednesday’s home since 1899, just seven years after they joined the Football League in 1892, and the ground has undergone some huge changes in that time. These photos take you back in time through the stadium’s history, from...
Ernie Harper, a runner and former Hallamshire Harrier, competed at Paris 1924 in the cross-country, now more commonly known as trail running. One hundred years ago, Harper ran in an infamous cross-country event that year in which a difficult course combined with extreme weather conditions of over 40C and noxious fumes emitted from a power plant near the course, resulted in only 15 of the 38 starters crossing the finish line. Sign up for newsletters from The Star After the event, both the Red...
