The antimicrobial potential of CRISPR-Cas systems is promising, yet how to best design or implement CRISPR nucleases remains poorly understood. An international team led by the Helmholtz Institute for RNA-based Infection Research (HIRI) in Würzburg has now addressed this knowledge gap.
A team of micro- and immunobiologists from the Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine, Yale University, and the University of Pittsburgh has found evidence suggesting that future research teams planning to use bacteriophages to treat patients with multidrug-resistant bacterial infections need to also consider how cells in the host's body respond to such treatment.
When we think of evolution, we think of a process that happens over hundreds or thousands of years. In research published in Ecology and Evolution a team led by Rick Relyea, Ph.D., professor of biological sciences and David M. Darrin Senior Endowed Chair at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, found a species of frog that has evolved over the course of merely 25 years. The adaptation was spurred on by something many assume is innocuous: salt.
Using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), Chinese astronomers have investigated radio emission from a rotating radio transient known as RRAT J1854+0306. Results of the study, published April 15 on the preprint server arXiv, shed more light on the properties of this transient.
In the United States, the number of so-called progressive prosecutors focused on criminal justice reform has risen, but few studies have addressed the relation between these prosecutors' policies and crime rates. In a new study, researchers examined whether progressive prosecutors in the 100 most populated counties affected crime rates from 2000 to 2020. They found that the inauguration of these prosecutors led to higher relative rates of property crime and total crime, but not to higher...
The Weld County Critical Response Team is investigating an officer-involved shooting in an East Greeley neighborhood. Police say a struggle ensued when a Greeley officer attempted to pull over 23-year-old Giovanni Pacheco and shots were fired. The release doesn’t specify who was shot, or how many shots were fired, but says Pacheco was taken to a hospital and treated for minor injuries.
Using data from various space telescopes and astronomical surveys, Armenian researchers have investigated three star-forming regions. The study identified hundreds of young stellar objects and provided important information regarding the stellar content of these regions. The new findings were presented in a paper published April 5 in the Astrophysics and Space Science journal.
Officials with Cannon Air Force Base announced that the 27th Special Operations Wing will host its first update on the ongoing per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) investigation of the year on May 14.
The Chief Nurse Research Internship programme is aimed at nurses, midwives and allied health professionals (NMAHPs) at the Trust who demonstrate a strong interest in clinical research and may aspire to explore this field further. The internship aims to develop those without much experience in research by providing training and mentorship opportunities in combination with protected time to facilitate the development of a research project relevant to their speciality and research interests. The...
