Houston Public Media— Cook and Johnson, the state representative for House District 139, are vying to succeed new Houston Mayor John Whitmire in the state senate. A special election to complete the 2024 portion of Whitmire's term is scheduled for May 4, and Cook and Johnson will again compete in a Democratic primary runoff on May 28.
