The station opened in the mid-1930s and was operated by West Yorkshire Road Car Company Ltd. It was known by many passengers as the Red Bus Station. It closed on March 31, 1990, when all bus services were transferred to the Central Bus Station. Part of the premises was occupied by Buckle's newsagents. The Headrow Shopping Centre opened in 1987 on the site of the former Schofields department store and was originally named the Schofields Centre. It boasted three levels of shops as well as a food court and cafe all connected by escalators and a glass lift. Edinburgh Council is exploring options to keep the Royal Mile’s tourist information open after its closure was announced by VisitScotland.
