Music fans flocked to Vallances on New Market Street to meet pop group The Bachelors. They had flown into Leeds Bradford Airport from Blackpool where they had been performing for the summer season on the Central Pier. The end of 1975 brought devastation and destruction as a large part of Kirkgate Market was consumed by fire. Around four acres of the site was destroyed in a blaze which took 110 fireman two hours to control. Earlier in the year Leeds and its footballing family were ‘robbed’ of European Cup glory against Bayern Munich. The fire took place in the city centre at no. 25 Wellington Street, by the junction with Thirsk Row, a warehouse building occupied by wholesale clothiers J. Hepworth & Son Ltd. The warehouse, which dated from 1881, had to be completely rebuilt, and continued to be occupied by Hepworths until the 1920s.
