A downed power line ignited dry grass, causing a nearly 180-acre fire northeast of Galeton earlier this month. Galeton Fire Chief Russ Kane credits oil infrastructure and well-maintained properties for helping crews get the blaze under control in less than two hours.
“It’s emotional seeing something so emblematic of our state with such history on fire. It’s such a historic, special building,” said Taylor Hatmaker, one of the guests who evacuated.
The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office said several homes were evacuated “due to the fire and material/items at that location detonating.”
